Getting My Feet Wet at Harvard

That title makes me sound far more academically ambitious than I actually am, but what the hell? The other day, I dropped by the Harvard campus and got my feet wet in their funky rock fountain ouside the Science Center. This has always been one of my favorite fountains in town, and yesterday it was so sunny that you could actually catch (and photograph) a rainbow in the spraying water!

Sunday Spontaneity

Today was one of those Sundays when you get home from running errands, exhausted, famished, and without even the energy to order takeout. Luckily, we'd had a few friends over for dinner on Friday and had some cold salmon, a picked-over salad of tomatoes, black beans, and red peppers, a few scraps of mozzarella cheese, and a carton of eggs. I can work with this! So tonight was omelette night - complete with fresh basil snatched from the flowerpot of our generous upstairs neighbor. I couldn't have been more contented if it were served by professionals. In my opinion, leftovers round out a Sunday just right.

For Father's Day (or any other day), what's better than a roasted chicken with bacon? My dad actually made his own Father's Day meal, but we all cleaned our plates as a gift. Well, we'd do that anyway...

Pièce de Résistance

The icing at this wedding was not so much on top of the cake; the night ended with an enormous bonfire set in the back yard. The fire must have been a good ten feet or more in diameter, and was so warm that we could feel the heat radiating from about twenty yards away. Also, quite symbolic, the fire began with two independent blazes, roaring independently until at last they met at the center and combined strengths.

A Fresh Start

Around the same time that the ceremony ended, the clouds re-emerged and we all ducked into the tent, with sweet lilac centerpieces and carefully folded napkins. Everything at this wedding was done with love, down to the pretty napkins used as towels and the evergreen-scented candles for the outdoor sink beside the restrooms.

Before "I Do"

This was my first time attending a wedding where the audience was asked to jointly marry the couple by vowing to support them in their union and then to sign a document showing our support. I thought it was a nice twist on the traditional customs, and I liked the way the ceremony was very customized for the couple, with the inclusion of a heartfelt anecdote, delivered by a member of the bride's family.

The Country Ways of the Granite State

What weird and wonderful weather! All day, the forcasts predicted thunderstorms, and when they finally hit in the afternoon, they only lasted about half an hour before the sun came pummeling through and the day was converted. This kind of light always makes me feel like I'm wearing sunglasses, and the wet streets only enhanced the light.

Sleeping Beauty

I'm not sure why, but the main route running through Hanover seemed to be a real trap for butterflies, and it was sad to see a few of them strewn along the side of the road. While maybe a little morbid, it was a great opportunity to catch the still beauty of an insect like this.

Playing by the River

The Connecticut River, shot off a public dock in Hanover. The dogs found plenty of ways to launch off (and climb back on) the platform, and blew off a lot of steam swimming on their "walk"!

New Hampshire's Lions

On my (hopefully) last stop of spring travels (I'm tired!), we drove up to New Hampshire for another fantastic wedding. Right off the bat, we got to enjoy a dog walk by the Connecticut River, alongside which these dandelions grew like weeds. Well, I guess they are weeds. But I found this one intact, directly in front of a paddy of cat-tails. I stopped to snap a picture... the dogs on the other hand, didn't miss a beat and I heard them launching into the water before I'd even finished the shot.

Natural Mirrors

During Jill's wedding weekend in Chatham, we stayed near this terrific little cove. Today the water was so still you could see perfect reflections of everything above it. The whole weekend provided a welcome feeling of calm. Despite the Memorial Day weekend and the busy traffic entering and leaving the Cape, the place itself, along with its relatively deserted beaches on these not-yet-swimmable days, was completely relaxing.
