Vintage Paradise

One of the favored local hangouts in Gloucester is a used record store called Mystery Train. There's also a pretty scant used bookstore upstairs, where you can find old volumes, if you're willing to rifle, but the real treasure is the store's collection of CDs and old records. There's even a $1.99 section at the entrance, where you can sometimes find a bargain on something you want. For graphic designers, they also sell scraps of old advertisements and retro postcards that are great for getting new ideas or doing collage.

Left of the Middle

The Middle East in Central Square - one of the best rock and roll haunts in town - although, in my humble opinion, stick to the upstairs shows. The basement will rock your eardrums - for days! My new favorite places to see live music in town are The Lizard Lounge and Toad, in Porter Square.

One Good Chord Deserves Another

Here's a picture of Mieka Pauley playing in Harvard Square today. She's one of my favorite local musicians, and we lucked out by arriving off the T right as she was playing her set. The first time I saw her perform at the Burren in Davis Square, a guy on bagpipes burst into the room playing something entirely different, pacing the length of the room and right back out the door all in about 45 seconds. Everyone laughed and she rescued the song by picking right back up where she had left off.
